How Rice Milling Works

From paddy to raw, polished grain.

A general overview of the raw (non-parboiled) rice milling sequence, shown for reference.

General process overview. These stages describe raw rice milling in general and do not represent a confirmed list of machinery installed at Nandani Rice Mills.

01

Paddy Reception

Incoming paddy is received, weighed and staged for processing.

02

Cleaning

Straw, dust, stones and foreign matter are removed from the paddy.

03

Dehusking

The outer husk is removed to yield brown rice.

04

Separation

Unhusked paddy is separated from brown rice and returned for re-husking.

05

Polishing

Bran layers are removed to produce white rice to the required degree.

06

Grading

Head rice and brokens are sorted by size.

07

Packaging

Finished rice is weighed and bagged for dispatch.

Bagged & ready

Output moves to bagged rice supply and trade dispatch.

Quality Focus

Why moisture and temperature control matter.

Most of a paddy grain's quality is set by the time it reaches the mill — but handling still matters. Moisture content and drying temperature affect head-rice yield and breakage more than almost anything else in the process.

Moisture Balance

Paddy milled too wet turns soft and crushes under hulling pressure; too dry and it turns brittle and cracks. Around 13–14% moisture is the industry-standard sweet spot for clean, whole-grain output.

Controlled Drying

Uneven or rushed drying introduces fissures that show up as broken grain later on — so drying and tempering are handled gradually rather than forced.

Careful Cleaning & Dehusking

Removing stones, husk and foreign matter before the grain is put under pressure reduces mechanical breakage through the rest of the line.

Grading Before Bagging

Sorting head rice from brokens by size keeps each bag consistent, instead of mixing grades together.

General principles the mill's raw-milling line is built around — standard industry practice, applied consistently, batch after batch.
